A year or so ago when I was surfing Stephenie Meyer’s website as a preliminary Twilight fan, I found a link that was called the playlist for Twilight. I clicked it intrigued and found a list of songs that Meyer had put up on her site. The playlist had a few of the tunes that she ‘heard in her head’ whilst writing Twilight.
Some notable songs included, “I’m Not Okay” by My Chemical Romance, “Here With Me” by Dido and “In My Place” by Coldplay. I say notable because they were the songs I actually recognized from her playlist. Then I looked at the other names I hadn’t really seen before and I decided to get a listen. I downloaded Muses’s song, “Time is Running Out”.
I still am not sure whether I really like Muse or not. Different.
But yeah anyways…on to my topic of discussion. Authors and their music ‘playlists’ or soundtracks to their novels. I honestly hadn’t seen an author post their playlist before Stephenie Meyer but then afterwards I noticed Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare and Melissa Marr doing the likes.
When did this start does anybody know? I mean … I haven’t been around for awhile heh heh…so yanno. I mean obviously people in the 60’s and 70’s didn’t have CD playlists but they did listen to music while writing I know that for certain.
For me as a writer, I always ALWAYS need music. I mean, hello I very much need music to write my ‘Music Blog’ haha, but that’s a no brainer. Music is vital in my life. It helps me study whether its just symphonies or songs from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack to tunes from artists like Amerie, Gwen Stefani or Skillet.
I just think it’s really groovy that authors are doing this, allowing readers to see what tunes they listened to, to pen out their novel. It’s cool that they are letting us see their songs, because that can sometimes be a personal thing for certain people. Perhaps they’re embarrased that they have the latest bubble gum pop on their iPod or heavy intense ‘emo’ music.
What if authors started selling soundtracks with their books? ‘Twilight’s soundtrack…featuring Linkin Park, Dido, David Gray and much much more!!!’ What a random mix.
That’s all I’ve got for today. Leave some comments, I’ll write back, sorry about not commenting back. I will now!!!
